I have a 2005 Sportsman and I was riding through mud and snow the other day and got stuck. I used my winch to pull myself out and noticed some smoke coming from the bottom of my Quad, i didn't think much about it because I was in mud at the time. After I got my self out and started to go again I was hearing some clunking in the front. I noticed the the RPM were fairly high as if I wasn't in high gear. Now when I start it, it moves when idling in low and reverse and also high RPM when in high. Did I do something to the transmission or something else. Any help would be appreciated. have you checked the shift linkage,i just took apart my sons tranny in his 2000 traiboss and put new spline in,doesn`t sound like the tranny to me but i`m not and expert,just a shade tree mechanic.

 

Were you reving it up in hi range? Smell burning rubber? Sounds like belt problem.

 

welcome to the forum the both of you,you might want to pull the belt cover and inspect for fried belt or something.smell for burning belt.maybe secondary clutch buttons went south.

 

i bet the smoke was the belt,take the cover off and inspect..ONLY use the OEM polaris belt,nothing else i have tried has compared to the quality ..
