Default 2 stroke vs 4 stroke

I'm new to riding but looking for a quad my buddy has a polaris I've ridden it and like it. It's a 400 2 stroke I believe a 1998. I'm looking at the scramblers and noticed that the earlier mod's were 2 strokes then change to 4 stroke in the newer years. I'm looking for an educated opinion on this. I'd appreciate anyone that could shed some light I'm going to be trail riding only
Thanks
Bob

The 2 strokes are built for speed. The RPMs need to be kept up high to keep from fouling plugs. On trails it takes a lot of clutch work on a 2 stroke. 4 Strokes are the way of the future. I rode 2 strokes my whole life until about 2 years ago. They are so much easier on trails. It is like a car in the sense if you need more power just down shift to a lower gear. On a 2 stroke to get more power, you have to get the RPMs up high and work the clutch. IMO go 4 stroke.

Four strokes are better on trails. You don't have to keep them wound up all the time, no fuel oil mixing, their quieter and have plenty of power.
4-stroke ----hands down!

I have a 1996 polaris 400L 2 stroke, oil injected. I like my 2 stroke, but it is paid for!!!! but if I were to buy a new one and had the choice it would be a 4 STROKE hands down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

simple, 2 stroke is more prone to engine wear and burning(adding) of oil and 4 strokes last longer and less issues. if power is a big issue then the 2 strokes are way more power and modded are real strong but 4 strokes are way more reliable then the 2 strokes. imo

2-strokes are lighter and have more power per cc and they're WAY quicker. But 4-strokes are better overall.

2 strokes are cheaper to rebuild.
4 strokes are cleaner to run and you dont smell like 2 stroke oil after riding.
2 strokes burn a lot more gas. If you have a 2 stroke and 4 stroke with the same size
gas tank the 4 stroke will go a lot farther.

2strokes are fun to ride but you need to stay on the maintenance more so than a 4stroke.But with less $$$$$$$you can make the 2strokes out run most anything.(had a old 400L Sportsman that would smoke the then new 650 Kawis)
