2004 Sportsman DOA!!!!!!!
#1
I have a 2004 Sportsman 500HO that after cranking up fine and driving a few different times on Thursday, the last time seemed to be the death of it. It cranked fine and I pulled off, went about 30' and then it shut off. I tried to start it again and it will only turn over but will not crank. I check it out some today and seems to not be getting any spark. I changed the starter solenoid but didnt help. I changed the spark plug and nothing. With the new plug attached to the coil wire and grounded to side of motor I tried to crank and look for spark, but none there. Does anyone know how to test the coil with an ohm meter? Any other ideas of what it may be? I hope its not the ECM or ignition controller. Any help would be a blessing. Thanks in advance.

My 2004.5 died on the trail one day, come to find out there was a factory defect that year. they pinched the plug wire between the body and the frame. after reading about it I took an old plug wire and hooked it up temporary,it fired right up.Had the work done for free at my dealer. he put a new coil and plug wire on it.just a suggestion for something to check.

first if you don't have a factory service manual I would buy one off ebay. It gives you what the ohm readings are suppose to be when testing the stator and pulse (trigger coil). I knew nothing about this until I had my own stator problem. see this thread.

I would check the spark plug wire and cap, then the ETC throttle setting and then ohm test the trigger coil and stator. You will need to know what the ohm reading is suppose to be for your make and model and what wire to use. A factory service manual would tell you this or Old Polaris Tech may be nice enough to look it up for you. Make sure you use a decent ohm meter.
