1999 500 scrambler 4x4
I have a 1999 500 scrambler 4x4 and i think the engine is blown but i have an insurance place near me that sells all sorts of these things that are in damaged shape but the engines are fine. I was wondering what year motors were compatible with the 1999 models so that it would be just a basic bolt up operation. Can anyone give me some insite to what i am lookin in to?

I had the wheeler out and i was ripping around on it pretty hard one night and then the next day i started it up and it sounded like the bearings were going out on it. Even just at an idle i could here what sounded like knocking inside to me. Against better judgement i limped it around the yard to see if i could pin point where the sound was comming from and then it made a funky noise from in or near the jug-crank area..and then the engine quit...not locked up though.. I havent really messed with it since that happened. I need to check the compression and see what it is doing there and thats about all i really know of what to do on these machines so far. Ive never messed around with the polaris motors so im not sure what specs to be looking for here(compression wise). I have all the tooling and the know-how , just need some guidance on what I should be looking for or what i might want to be checking into doing. Like i said.... if i have to i will purchase another wheeler from www.crashedtoys.com and switch out the engines if I really have to... but if its a simple rebuild Id like to save some dough and waste it in other places.

Yeah i was thinking about the clutch too because at the same time , my neighbor had some clutch problems too. We were going through some serious mud crud and other sh#t and didnt pull the drain plugs on the pull start covers. I dont know if that wouldve made a difference tho. But for sure Ill get it apart and do a check over all the stuff you guys mentioned..... Hey guys I appreciate all your input and Ill keep you updated on my finds. If i get the beast fixed , Id gladly buy you guys a few rounds at the local "watering hole" !!!! Catch up with you guys when I know more.
