Clarification on Service Intervals.

yea pretty much what I was thinking. I use it around the Farm bunches. Try to make sure it has run for a while when I do use it. The oil still looks good, I am at just about 100hrs so I may fudge a tiny bit but not long.
So planning for an oil change and other necessary fluids soon! Hope it warms up a bit otheriwse off to the dealer with $$ for full service.

Yea another thought too, which I didn't consider, someone pointed out to me (my cuz gets credit) is even
if the machine sits like several months like a season, aka WINTER. Good thing to do is change out the oil
at minimum. I thinks its more GP then maybe required but when you think about it, makes sense, sits, gunks,
moisture anything that sits ages eventhough its not used. Good to dump the old and fill new.

I would have to agree with the gentlemen that said the pm (preventive maintance) depends on how hard your runnig your machine and what conditions your running it in. I way over do it, I just bought a new 550xp and my dealer where I bought it told me to do a basic maintance after 10 hours of use. I just did one yesterday. I have 12 hrs on the machine and they are very hard hours( snow plowing). I will be doing a basic service every 50 hrs from here on out, because I ues my atv to spray about 1500 acres of crops every year. I am wondering if I should drain anyother fulids at the same time, besides the engine oil. I will grease on an as needed basic with a daily pre use check list, if any body know what eles should be changed at the 50, 75, or 100 hour intervals will you let me know. Thank Tyler

yeah im also interested in fluids..
what all should be changed on a scrambler 400 that i just bought? its an 02 but is really clean, its either low hours, or someone just babied it.
either way im guessing i should change all fluids to be safe.
what fluids and weights do you guys recommend for my engine size?
thanks

maintainance intevalves is what ever you want for time and its up to you if you go w/ the mfg. suggestion. i agree that condtions and the way its being riiden makes a differnce in how long you should go between service or the fluids. imo.

According to my 08 owners manual and my $100 dollar Polaris service manual they both say before you store your quad for the winter ( season ) you should change the oil before you put it away . I hope I don't need to re-change this spring I'd feel like I'm tossing money away . One would think the manuals from Polaris should be correct .

I don't see why the manual says that you should change the oil before storing for the winter, as the oil will draw moisture as it sits, if you would for some reason start your ATV during the winter, the engine would more or likly run hot enought to brun off any moisture in the oil. I would just wait to do a basic maintance in the spring or when you start using it for the seanson. I use this same principal for all of our farm equipment and my lawn and landscpaing equipment as well.

That's what they both say thus that's what I did . I was going to leave it and change the oil and the other fluids in the spring but since both Polaris manuals said do before you store I went ahead and changed all my fluids . Polaris techs must have a reason or it would not be in print so I'm going to follow what my service manuals say .

No matter when you do a service, make sure that you keep some type of records, because if you do, the dealer is less likly to blame any error on the operator. Also you can have the dealer do an oil test, that will let you know what materials are in the oil, any questions about oil testing send me a PM, cause what I know does not scrach the serface, so I am going to ask my buddy about it, but its just one of those good things to know, incase your courisou about what contanimants are in your oil.

Well I didn't want to start any debate. I was simply adding a Good Practice
(GP) measure to the thread if anything else. I think when it boils down
to it we should all follow the recommendations of the Mfg. but I also know
from experience you have to add the practical good ole common knowledge
to the equation too. Yes I think leaving old broken down fluids in your tanks,
reserves, engine, carb, motor etc. etc. for a long while is NOT a good thing.
Nor would be starting and running your machine with it in there after that
long time lapse either, so I think both would be true.
As for me, I don't baby my quad, but I don't stupidly ignore good ole
PM either. I probably won't be the one to be soo tidy as to do both,
but I do start mine more now when it sits for a few weeks and given
the chance, I run it and ride it..
