running problems

dont always think its the motor. the clutches have a lot to do with the RPM's of the motor. i would check them out for any obvious signs of wear. theres the rollers and weights on the front clutch and the buttons and helix on the rear clutch. havent ever taking a front clutch apart but the rear clutch is very simple. take the bolt out of the middle of the clutch and it will slide right off. on the back side there is a retaining ring. remove that ring and wiggle the clutch apart (might have to convince it to move with a rubber mallet) there are 3 plastic buttons in there. should be nice and smooth maybe have a little scoring to them. the helix (the ramp looking peice) should be smooth also.

Well I decided to tear the engine down and it is the cam. The exhaust lobe is almost round there is a bit of a hump but not much. I ordered a new one this morning and it will be here Thursday so the say. Not to cheap $310.00 plus tax just for the cam. I guess its not bad its better than a quad just sitting there not running right.

I picked up my cam today and got it installed. Before I put the fenders back on I decided to take it out for a ride and it is still acting up. When I push the throttle it acts similar as before dont know what else it could be maybe the coil ?

sure you got the timing correct? what about the rocker arms? did they wear too or are they still ok? you could also check all the ground wires that run between the motor and frame. maybe while at idle the ground is ok but when the motor revs and vibrates its knocking the connection loose.
have you checked the clutches out yet?

I checked the timing and everything was done right. I started just trying different things like checking the coil and wiring and everything was fine. What I did find was the airfilter was almost like it was choking it like not getting enough air, I put the old airfilter back on (its a KnN) and it is running better but still a little sputter or stutter at 3/4 throttle. I actually plowed the driveway with it about 5 to 6 inches and it worked fine just acting up if I pushed the trottle a bit to hard. I also checked the clutches and they seemed fine. Is there anything else I may be missing.

Well it turns out that it was a loose sparkplug wire where it goes into the coil. I must have pulled it out when I was putting the gas tank back in. Not enough so it wouldnt run but enough to make it run bad. I am going to put it all back together later today and take it for a good ride. Thanks for everything.
