exhaust question

Nope your 400L doesn't have donuts to my knowledge. The sockets and cups can be cleaned up, and maybe new springs. Also make sure the muffler isn't packed tight so it can't flow. If it can't flow it will leave thru the joints. Doc

I have the exact same thing happening with my 95 Sportsman 4x4 400. When I first got it (about 4 weeks ago) it was bad (smoke billowing from under the gas tank where the joint with springs is), but it seems to have gotten better (less smoke) since I have been running it a little (plowing).
I am planning to do the little maintenance routine where you remove the "plugs" on the bottom of the exhaust. Has anyone done that? Does it make much difference? It probably hasn't been done in years (or maybe never) judging from the rust and such around the plugs.
I did stick my finger in the end of the exhaust (while it was cold and off) and there is about a 1/16th inch layer of "tar" in there. I wonder if that is a lot worse deeper into the exhaust system. I saw a post somewhere where someone actually soaked their exhaust in a vat of thinner or gas or some such substance (can't remember the name of that stuff... see it often in big mechanic shops... think it starts with a "V"). I wonder if that might be worth a try...?
There IS decent pressure coming from the end of the exhaust, so I don't think I have any serious issues, but I am sure that any blockage in the exhaust will affect the performance to some degree.
Anybody have any experience they'd like to share?
