XP owners! Is an oil change easy on them?
#11
It is up in there a few inches..so far I haven't punctured mine..or had anything even touch it for that matter...maybe I have been lucky but looking at it yes it is kind of exposed but it would have to be a perfect shot for something to get it..so it really hasn't concerned me YET..
I haven't given it alot of thought because I am holding out for some good skids.. I did suggest that who ever ends up making some skids should make a removeable plate over that area..maybe something attached with countersunk Zeus fasteners...

I never did the pinch the oil line thing, I just drained the oil tank then ran the motor for few seconds to get the remaining cup of oil out of the crank case pumped out and into the oil tank as well.
</end quote></div>
No need to run the motor, you got a recoil starter right?
Just pull it a few times and all the oil will drain out.

The XP is not CVT Belt drive? Its a manual with wet clutches?</end quote></div>
TLC,
Some "CVT" systems are wet clutches... I believe my sons 400 AC is a wet clutch CVT... changing the oil takes 4 quarts.

Much easier than the 500. Just like HO stated. It's even way easier to put the new oil in.
For that $167, I doubt it included everything. I think it's about $80 just for all the fluids, but I could be wrong.
I really don't see a need for anything to protect the oil filter. It's not hanging out at all, and the hole is just a little bigger than the filter itself. I have private land for hunting and ATVing. We make the trails by cutting the trees (obviously), but the little ones grow up very fast. So this makes plenty of little sticks everywhere. I haven't even seen a tire puncture yet, so I'm not going to worry about the filter or even the CV boots. You have a better chance of ripping a boot from swamp grass than you do with sticks.
Often times we think way too far into these things, and the probability is very slim that anything will happen.

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>what are your thoughts on protecting that oil filter. It is in a nice place for maintenance</end quote></div>
Not sure how you can think crawling underneath a ATV to change a oil filter is a nicer place for maintenances. The old location on the side of the ATV was as easy as it could get.

I can see a sharp crowned rock putting a hole in that baby very easily. That hole looks to be 3- 4 " in Dia. at least.
They should make 1/8th checker plated spin on oil filters for those.

TLC, I agree the 500 filter is a little easier to remove, but the 800 is a whole different story. I cringe when I have to change oil on the wife's 500 or my Dad's 800.

wow that sounds simple makes ya wonder why i just paid 167.00 for labour on my oilchange.......hopefully its just the first one that is that much..??</end quote></div>
I would look on my ticket and see if they done a complete change of everything, diffs, tranny, engine and greased it for that price... Heck if I was close I would have done it for that...</end quote></div>
so i was off a little it was 127.50 lab
12.99 oil filter
19.78 syn oil

TLC,
Actually, I like the filter in that vertical position rather than a horizontal position for a couple of reasons.
However, contrary to what others might say, I've talked to a guy who found a couple of nasty "dents" in the bottom of his when he changed his oil and filter on his XP the first time. So, I'm going to "think a little further" into this. LOL
That guy has already taken preventative measures with his. If I get one, I will too, as I'm one of those "lucky" ones. LOL
