Touchy, just throwing ideas around, I have people who say is dumb that if the speed quits on your ATV you loose your Awd function, I just say "it sure is". Now a 4" hole with a tin oil filter on the bottom ground side is just not a brilliant location on any machine let alone a off road vehicle.

We only ride them we don,t date them.

I like the easy access of the oil filter. However, we do ride rocks... a lot. I would protect the filter.

I see nothing wrong with suggestions to improve the machine... that's how things get made better. As a matter of fact, a lot of the bitching and complaining about the old machines is why the XP is the machine that it is.

Look at the picture. Polaris did think about the filter protection. You can see how the steel is different there. It is VERY unlikely that anything is that exact size to fit up in there and puncture the filter. Not sure about the poly skids yet, but the steel part of it under the XP is the strongest I have seen on an atv.

You want to see an exposed filter, look under my Chevy 2500HD. The Allison tranny spin on filter hangs right out in the open. I have taken the truck through places that some don't take their atv's through. I haven't had a problem, but it does worry me because it hangs out there.

LO..I hear ya..just seems like the better the machine gets the more the some people want to monday morning quaterback...and it is normally those who have no first hand experience with the machine who do it..that's all..the XP has proably been nitpicked more in 6 months than any machine in history....
Most people who know me consider me very picky(actual they say I am ****)especially when it comes to mechanical things..and so far the design problems are minimal IMO..oil filter protection..yes they should have put an easily removable plate over it..that is an easy fix...
To show I'm not just defending the XP because I chose to buy one I'll throw in my nitpick..I dislike the fact that they used the old style shifter morethan anything(except the tires,lol)...if I have one main design complaint it is that dang shifter...whoever decided to leave that needs to be fired,lol..

Roofer..I too was worried about the high density poly whatever it is skids..so far though I must say I am impressed...I though more than once that I had to have cracked one..but so far not really even much of a scratch on them..they are amazingly tough for "plastic"...

Not too worried about the plastic just yet. I had some plastic skids on my BF that held up just fine and they were nowhere near as thick as on the XP. The plastic does help in the snow because it glides better.

I don't complain about stock tires because most are no good. The one's on the XP are 10X's better than what comes on other brands. Most change them out anyhow. My main complaint is the width of the machine with aftermarket wheels and bigger tires. The rest of the machine impresses me every time I ride it.

Its looks 3"+ round, You make a ATV that will do thousands of miles over its life time traveling over every type of god knows what terrain, and the chance are very high that something will get its ugly hard pointy head up in there.

My skid plate dents have dents in them.

They replaced the spark plugs? That is interesting...

How many miles and hrs on your XP? Wonder if the plugs were fouled or something. And if so...why?

Making a suggestion to cover the oil filter either by Polaris or by the owner is nothing different than...

Tying up the exposed brake lines in the back that many have done.
Looking for better skid plates... especially to protect the A-arms.
Replacing the crappy stock tires.

... or spending hundreds upon hundreds of dollars on all kinds of mods to "make them better".

As far as I can tell, the XP is the best ATV on the market... by far and away. However, that doesn't mean that we can't or shouldn't have suggestions to make it better.

I guess you have to buy one and become part of the "club" before you can have questions, make suggestions, or have criticisms.

Guys, don't worry about "hijacking" my thread. Of course, a .25 charge for each post would be nice... I like the idea of making a plate for that hole. Couldn't hurt. I know with my 2 500 machines that the filter is there, but can be a real pain to take off. I can't get my big hands in there very well and I've never had much luck with the "socket" style oil wrenchs. I was able to find a big set of oil filter pliers that are very nice and allow me to get a good grip on the small filters. On the XP with the recessed filter you would have to use the socket style from what I can see. Still, it's not as bad as it looks in my opininon.

Dave if this is directed at my posts I think you may have misunderstood my..I can understand how what I wrote could be misunderstood..
...my post was not in response to your suggestion to make a plate to cover the filter...that is a good idea..and I have thought about that myself...
Notice what i quoted in my first post..
And the non-owners comment wasn't meant that way at all..my post was in response to what looked like a negative statement about the ease of maintenance..made after Roofer and myself said it is easy to change the oil and filter....it really has nothing to do with owning one..but about some people, and it is only a few, seem to like nitpick with guys that have actually spent time looking in person at how it is designed and actually doing maintenance on the machine..of course everyine has a right to their opinion..even if it is only based on looking at a picture...I guess I should have chose my words more carefully..I thought my comment was funny and was laughing about the whole thing..sorry if I struck a nerve..
The fact that the oil filter is on the bottom only makes maintenance harder if you can't lay on the floor or a creeper..in that case getting to the drain plug is going to be rough too...lol..
