i work at a heavy equipment company and we have a winch truck with 5/8" line on it. have 3 clamps on that winch just behind the hook and never has the cable pulled through those clamps. just my .02 worth

I've seen some of the old timers somehow braid the end back into the cable making a loop. This was done on pretty good size cable and the winch was used hard almost daily;I never seen the repair job fail.....I'm sure it would be hard to do on the small line that our winches have but maybe someone else here knows more.
I wish I'da paid closer attention!

when i was in crane operator school, we had to make our own slings. braiding wire rope is NOT a fun job. if you do it everyday and get used to it, i can see how it would be an easy job, buy my mind and fingers were going haywire. if you use the clamps, make sure to orrient them properly. you need to crush the dead end of the cable and not the good side.

When my cable got frayed and kinked I wrapped black electrical tape around it like you do when you splice electrical wires, only I wrapped it at least ten layers thick. I held the cable with a big pair of pliers and cut it in half right in the middle of the tape with an angle grinder. I unwrapped the tape and it was a perfect cut. Then I bought a crimp on type of cable clamp from Lowe's, slid it in place and mashed it with a sledge hammer. It never slipped or broke. The end.
