Can't really help ya with the starter engaging, other than to speculate that it might be a short somewhere. Like possibly jumping the selenoid. The pulling to one side in 4wd is common on machines with locked front diffs. One wheel will get more traction than the other, or you may have one tire aired up more than the other. If it does it all the time probably more serious.

NO it should not do it in two wheel, if it does it's the roller cage or "magnatized armature plates. Was it wet snow? Did it do it when sitting still or moving more? When on throttle or off throttle? Maybe try flagging the title "Please Help Old Polaris Tech" see if he's heard of this.

Have had solenoids short out engaging starters customers have had to disconnect batteries!,Plus check starter bendix also. awd locking probably because of magnetized/worn armature plate. Replace both as the other side will go also, sooner or later.
