u can test the sensor, can't remember what the resistance specs are off the top of my head, but if u put the sensor in hot water and check the resistance as it gets hotter.

when i get to the manual, i'll get the specs, if it's not the sensor, i would check and make sure u have coolant flowing into the motor, then maybe it's the water pump

If you have coolant flow and a clean rad with a working fan it has to be just a bad sensor .

thanks for all the help.. but while i have an audience.. after i fix the light/overheating problem i am going to put some tires and rims on it. i have a good deal for some 27 inch mudzillas and some itp rims. i was wondering if that is too large of a tire for such an old 4 wheeler. and do all rims fit all atvs (is the lug pattern the same?)

i don't want to cause other problems (like with the axle) or parts???

Ok ,after looking at my manual there are other things you can check. Is the coolant system bleed properly so there are no air in system ,and the rad cap can wear out, it suppose to control the amount of pressure in the cooling system, the cap should sustain 13psi relief for 5 minutes or longer.

All my manual says about the hot light sensor is that it comes on at 221 F or 105 C.

The manual (Clymer) just says have the cap pessure tested it does not say how, I would bring the cap to a automotive rad shop and ask if they can do it.
