I am looking to buy a new quad, i really like the scramblers for their speed, 4wd, and auto tranny. I would rather the 500 b/c of the 4 stroke reliability but the price is a bit steep for my buget, on the other hand the i can handle the 400's price easier. can someone compare the two for me as far as how they perform. I don't need specs, I can get that from the polaris site i want your opinion and why.
Thanks, physcorider

I ride with a 400 Scrambler and he's had some stupid problems like his fly wheel slipped and reversed the timing thus blowing the motor.but apart from that its a good machine .It uses a bit more gas than our 500 sc's but performes as well everywhere else except mountain road climbing were it lags abit.It is a good machine but the power is not as nice as the 500 and after saying all that my buddy is looking for a 500 next year.
Oh and he broke a chain and stuffed it into and cracking the gear case .Ive heard 500 do the same thing if there over tightend.
Ive had no problems with mine but Im a maintanence freak and I think you have to be with anything that comes under a sport bracket.
Hope this helps you out with your decision.

Stock for stock they have the same speed...give a mph to the 500. The 400 is "zippier" and the 500 has more low end torque. The 500 is pretty much maxed out for power. The 400 can be modded fairly cheaply to waste the 500.

So if you want fast...both will do.
If you want fast made faster...get the 400.

Both are very reliable by the way.

I`ve riden with 400 Scrams and the only place I see them lacking is the slow rock crawling type of riding. They will do it just not as smoothly because of the lack of low end which can be made up for with mods. If you plan on doing a lot of slow technical riding get the 500 if not and most of your riding will be over 20 mph then the 400 will do just fine. HTH

Read the "Help Me Make A Choice" thread in this forum. There is some good advice in there also.

My advice, whatever you get, make sure it is 4x4.

Regards,

MrMan
