I have a a 04.5 400 sportsman and noticed the yokes of the front axle shafts were loose (had lateral play) I took the shafts out and noticed that the problem is where the male axle shaft yokes (splines) enter the female part of the diff. Is this just normal wear, is it OK? I thought there was a bearing bad inside but everything looks good, no oil leaks, I changed it anyway. also the rear of my front driveshaft has a lot of play as well, again the splined part that slips together.

Does anyone else have some input to this question? I am looking to buy a quad and all the ones I have looked at so far have the same problem as the poster. I find both the axleshaft yokes and driveshaft yokes are loose where they connect to the diffs or trans. I have looked at 2002-2004 Polaris 600-700's. What exactly is loose and how hard/much to fix?
Thanks

I had that issue on my 05 800. Bought new yokes and in a short amount of time they had play again. Left them that way and never had any issues. Some play is ok but if you have a ton then may need to replace. Take a look at some from the dealer or ask service. They should be able to give some insight on how much is excessive.
