Default 2007 Polaris sportsman 500 EFI---- gas in oil

Hi I have 2 2007 Sportsman 500 with efi and I am getting gas into the engine oil. It did it for a bit, I changed the oil and it was good last summer . Been using it for two weeks now and it filled the oil container full of gas. What could be causing this problem?

Hi, I had a look at my quad today and it's actually water in the oil not gas. I can see why water gets into the oil. There is hose from the air filter box running directly into the oil container. If you get any snow or water in the air box it will go into the oil container. Seems like a poor design to me. My family has always owned Yamaha and never ever had this problem. Hope I didn't hurt my engine.

generally speaking you should not be able to get water in the airbox unless you submerge the machine to just about the stop of the seat. after that you have no choice but to suck water into the air box. that tube that runs into the box to the crankcase is there to vent crankcase pressure. would rather it be there than just an open hole to get dirt and mud into then there is some big problems.

Finally got the problem figured out. With the oil tank being on it's own in front of the engine, you get a lot of condensation in the tank and hoses when using it in cold weather. In one week and 1/2 of using it maybe 15mins a day, there was enough water in the oil to actually freeze in the bottom of the oil tank and starve the piston of lubrication. Motor needs a new piston and the cylinder walls are scratched. My mechanic says this is a big problem with Polaris in cold weather or humid weather. Too bad I didn't know this before I bought as I need it for spring calving season in Canada which is usually cold and humid. My mechanic said that there may be some kind of cover for the oil tank. Anyone know of this cover?

We have a lot of cold weather riders and I havent heard of any of them getting enough water in the resevoir to freeze in the bottom. Have you had it in any deep water lately? Maybe the mechanic is right but I cant see that much condensation building up in a week and a half. But I have been wrong b4

I live in Canada and do alot of winter riding with both our 97 and 01 500s and never had that problem, I have the older aluminum alloy oil tank not the new plastic oil tank, maybe that helps.

Anytime you run an engine you should get the temp up to the normal operating range to avoid condensation. That much in that short bof time is bad for sure, you might want to look for something more than condensation
