Oil Change Question

Hi All,
I'm sure this has been gone over before, but since I'm kinda new, I'll ask. I want to change the oil in my 04 Sportsman 700 EFI, I've always thought I "had to" use Polaris oil and filter. I've seen comments from you guys that lead me to believe I don't "have to" and that something else may even be better. What is the general consensus on the best oil to use, and what other brand of filter can I find? What weight of oil do you all use?

Well, this is one of the questions which has no answer. Like what kind of barbecue do is best? There is no real answer, and 100 different people will tell you 100 different oils and swear by them to the grave. Anyway, i use 10w-40 oil and i run in about 20f-100f. There are many different oils u can use, i would just spend a couple extra bucks on what ur service manual says, because they probably know what they are talking about.

on my old 00' sportsman the only polaris oil it seen was from the factory. after that it was 10w30 oil with the approved rating as recomended by the owners guide. 7000miles when i sold it, and didnt burn oil. i always used a fram filter from either walmart, fleetfarm or local auto parts.
my new wheeler ill be chaning oil soon and iv been looking at either amsoil (thats what polaris uses and sells with there name on it). but i looked at getting amsoil from local places, and after id buy the filter and 2qts of oil its cheaper to get the polairs oil change kit for $25 at a local dealer. there is 0w40 mobile syn oil on sale this week for $6 ea qt. i may just by a case save some money down the road. then all i have to do i buy filters for about $5ea. plus i need to change my truck oil this week. its 2k over. my wheeler iv never been over. iv always changed before its due.

I used to use Polaris oil, but never recalled hearing Polaris owned their own refinery.
Should have my quad by the end of the month so it will be Mobil 1 with a touch of Lucas oil stabilizer. Amsoil is also good, I've just been using Lucas products forever and Mobil 1 has the best rep for vehicle engines, and it shows in the price.

I buy the oil change kits. Its synthetic, and its like 20 bucks here at the factory dealer in Roseau. No reason to get all bent on Amsoil or mobil one when the factory stuff is just as good, I mean come on, its an atv, not a 300hp v-8.
I'm not talking down the other oils, I ONLY run Mobil 1 in my trucks, and Amsoil Intercepter in my sleds, but when it comes to my wheeler, the polaris kits only make sense.
And for you guys that think, oh this is just another guy with zero knowledge about this kind of stuff, well if thats how you think thats fine. My NBS ZR2 S-10 ran wide open for 150,000 miles, 100,000 of those miles were with a Vortec 350 in it..... I beat the **** out if it, and if it wern't for Mobil 1 it would have had a heart attack long before I sold it.
Thats why I say you don't need anything else but the Polaris oil change kits, they are cheaper than buying the filter and oil seperatly, and an ATV just isn't even stressed that much to need anything else, even one that gets beat into the ground. Just change the oil in the spring and fall to keep the moisture out of the oil, and use the proper oil weight.

I did just that today. Went to the dealer and picked up an oil change kit for my 700 and the wife's Hawkeye, about 58 bucks for the two of them. It would have been maybe 10 bucks cheaper to go the Mobil1 route at wal mart, but I feel better using what was "designed" to be used in both machines.
