if there is in fact gas coming out of the recoil part of the motor then the seal is bad. generally caused by bearings being out (2 thumpers like to eat bearings). its not a bad job to repair but you do have to pull the motor and split it.

 

i'm gonna try draining the motor tomorrow and putting in a new plug and draining the carb. thanks for all the help. the fuel coming out of the bottom of the recoil only started after it flooded. it never did it before this. i'm hoping it will be ok once it's running again.

 

ok i think it will run now i cleaned it out and it fired a few times, but i broke the throttle cable. i'm trying to find another one but it's quite pricey over a hundred bucks for an 86 model. but 51 for a 87 model. does anyone know of a better way to do this? or a mod that can help me?

 

in a pinch, i've used a derailleur cable (longest one) off of a ten speed to get me by til i had the cash to lay out for a real replacement. crude, but it works.
