Default 2001 Polaris Sportsman 500 HO

I bought my first ATV a 2001 Sportsman 500 HO .. I first want t othank everyone for helping me out as I know some of my questions are VERY well dumb

Heres a few questions

Is it in AWD when I can see the letters or when they are coverd?

It seems to hop alittle in reverse is this normal?

Right side of engine gets hot to the point in shorts after 30 min of riding I had to move my leg as far away as I could as it really heated it

The N light doesnt come on guy I bought it from said he swapped display and that didnt fix it that its just a clip switch near back wheels . Any help with this would be great

Is there a easy way to tell if I'm in H or low?

The starter is starting to go, I was told just take out the airbox and its right there. Its a do it yourself fix. Is that true and what starter would you reccomend

Where can I get a manual?

Thanks again for your time

The awd drive red light comes on in 4wd mode.

Push the yellow button while in reverse and see if that helps.

Yes the right side does get hot.

Maybe your neutral light is just burnt out or conection to tranny is disconected.

.Your in low range if your motor screams at 20 mph and your in high if the motor purrs at 55mph.

yes take the starter out by removing the air box, then take the starter apart,I bet you just have a sticking bush that needs cleaning.

I just bought a Clymer's manual .there sold on the net and in large department store for $50.

make sure the radiator is clean as it will help keep it cooler, but yes as he mentioned they do get hot on the right side. the switch on the tranny controls the netrual light.

Thanks for the replies so quickly and not making me NOT feel like a moron

LOL on the AWD light I was looking for something on the display and couldnt see the letters light red during the day.

I think the N light conection to tranny is bad. What part would I look up to replace there. Seems easy to get to

If I was to purchase a new starter what would you reccomend.

Thanks again

Ebays the best prices for starters if you do not want to fix yours.

Is your wire conection to your tranny on right? I don't know if I would bother fixing a neutral light if it would cost me on a full automatic ATV. On a manual shift ATV maybe I would.

I could try and fix it never have but your right its worth a shot

yes wire connection looks good on tranny and it is on the right. I was going to fix it to avoid my wife starting it in H . If its cheap enough I will replace it just wasnt sure what part to look up.. Looks like its only 2 screws to replace

Even if you start it up in gear it will not go anywhere. Its the same drive system as a snowmobile and those do not have a neutral whats so ever. Not sure but maybe there is a wire connection at the shift leaver also you can check.

I find these guys have good prices on parts. http://www.cyclepartswarehouse.com/f...Vs&mfg=Polaris

Also I have had it stall out on me yesterday and today. If I am drving slow 7-15 mph it seems to bog out some and I have to give it more throttle and then it takes off. If I dont and stop it will stall but starts right back up to an idle and will go again

Anything used should give it check over to see where your at. Cleaning the carb is a good idea. Clean/inspect the clutches another.
