Quad for Junior?
#1
My oldest son just turned 8 recently and we were at the bike shop today. He loved the 50cc version of the Scrambler. I made a deal with him that if he would start doing his chores, etc. that we would look at getting him a quad. I think the mini Scramblers are by far the best looking kids quads out there.
Have any of you purchased one of these and what do you think about them? It would get plenty of use in the future, he has two younger brothers that would be next in line when he out grows it.

racer_x, I havn't purchased one yet, but will be this spring for my soon to be 5yr old son. From what I've heard they have some carb issue's with there autochoke system. I would hope Polaris has cured these problems by now. If not I guess I've got some tinkering to do.

Racer_X,
I bought the Polaris 50 last fall for my Kids (7 kids, one scrambler. Sounds like trouble). Got it home and after 15 minutes it ran like crap. No power, rpm's going up and down, then quitting. Seemed like a lean fuel mixture problem. I tinkered with it to no avail. I then posted a message here for help and multiple people (I think MNEXPLORER was one) mentioned the autochoke. Multiple people mentioned that the dealers were changing the fuel filter. I tried disabling the auto-choke to no avail. I then changed the fuel filter to a generic autoparts store special, and OH BABY does it run great now !!!!!!!
Hope that helps.

mdorn, You can thank my dealer for that advice, I just happened to be hanging around that day. How does it run? Will it go thirty down a gravel road? Climb decent size hills, like the ones you would find on legal trails? Just curious if the fifty is enough. I was thinking the 50 would be better because then the little guy would be legal on the trails!

We got the 90cc Sportsman for my rather skinny 8 year old. The 50cc Scrambler was almost too small for him, again, he is on the small side. The 90cc quad fits him with room to grow. I've got a few action shots of him if you'd like to see the bike to boy size ratio.
I've also had some problems with the auto choke. Opening the throttle limiter helped this problem.
mdorn - Do you recall the make/type of fuel filter??

scavanau, all you need is the factory polaris inline filter found on all there full sized models, or any other thin inline filter. The polaris one is under $3. The problem with the ones they came with was too wide and would allow air into the line. The reason being is the filter lays on its side and seems to develop a air pocket even when it is bled out. It seems to vapor lock the fuel sys. especially the 50s.

Gentlemen,
When I went looking for a replacement filter I was thinking it was some kind of air bubble problem so I bought the smallest filter I could find. It is a tiny, funnel shaped filter with what looks like a stone as the filter element. Good or bad I don't know, but it works.
MNEXPLORER i'm not sure about 30 mph on a gravel road because I've got the throttle very limited. My oldest son, 7, has NO FEAR, and is very throttle happy!!! He's obviously has to crash once or twice to gain some respect for the ATV.
Climbing hills.....no problem. We've got three acres in Minnetrista with a small riding trail (of course). The biggest hill is about 50 yards long and quite steep, power is not a problem. Teaching that kid to be easy on the throttle, that's the problem!!!!
My only complaint would be not enough ground clearance.
