Default sportsman 550 xp reverse

Does anyone with a 550 have a problem of when taking off in reverse that it want to grab hard. Only once or twice have I been able to ease on the throttle and it not jerk hard. Is this just a characteristic of the 550's or do I have an issue with tyhe belt or clutches?

mines the same way. I can sometimes be extremly light on the throttle and it'll be smooth but I usually just gas it and go, I'm not to worried about it

This topic was thrown around a week or so ago. Consensus is that it happens to most if not all. I think there was also agreement that it is a little more noticeable when the quad is cold. Both my 550 and 850 do it. Not only a jerk engagement but a clunk also when cold.

I dont get so much of a clunking noise as I do get a little squeek when its cold. But I do think it might be worse when its cold. I guess my wife will just have to get used to it. I'll just tell her not to use reverse. Looking at the bumper on my truck, she not that good in that gearThanks guys

I think reverse is a low range gear so it grabs hard and quick at low rpm like low forward does.

Yeah...my XP 850 does the same.

What I am doing now...is continue to hold the brake while applying the throttle (just a little) and then the tranny engages. Then...I can give the throttle without that jerk type feeling. I do this in all forward and reverse gears.

Hope this helps...

My 550 does the same thing ever since it was new, figured it was normal, guess from what everyone says, it is.
