If the hole was in the bottom it would leak all the time DUH!!!

It is like a pressure release, when there is too much coolant in bottle it spews. When the engine cools the fluid in bottle is pulled back into engine, if there is any.

HMMMM since the battery was going it may not have been taking a charge properly, most of the current was being expended in the battery and not providing enough umph to spin the fan fast enough to cool it. Just a theory. I would anyway check all these other things also especially cleaning the rad.

The plastic bottle is called the recovery bottle. As the operating temp increases excess fluid is forced out of engine past pressure cap into bottle. When engine gets too hot (to include not being cooled enough in the rad) the coolant just keeps expanding into bottle filling it up until fluid blows out hole in top. While it was filling bottle air was coming out hole but you don't notice until the fluid spews.

Hit a cement mud hole couple weeks ago that filled my rad fins so that fan could not draw any air through. Took the screen off and was just a solid sheet of dried on silty mud. That ws reason behind me disassembling & cleaning well.
