Also whats intresting is if I tighten th erecoil starter down and use elec start it just clocks but if I loosen each screw half turn on recoil start it will then try to fire up any ideas ?
Check the bushing in the recoil cover and inside engine where bendix rides in for galling or damage. They are replaceable if needed. If look ok,grease bendix shafts at both ends and around bendix cup that retracts and see if works better. Plus make sure you have small washer on back of bendix.

both bushings are ok. What seems to be the issue is it doesnt open to engage the flywheel it just spins. What casues it to open?

Any idea how to fix it?

Same issue with tightening screws though when top 2 are fully tight it just clicks doesnt even spin. half turn back it will spin

Is this a new or used bendix? bendix uses centrifugal force to spin out and engage flywheel. Is spring in place properly in the bendix, counter weights ok? Does it spin out by hand and retract normally? Is bendix an OEM Polaris OR aftermarket? Can make a difference!

its new I bought it from DB Electrical SKU SMU5003 NEW STARTER DRIVE POLARIS ATV,BENDIX SPORTSMAN 500 Heavy Duty SMU5003

BY hand if I spin in the oppisite direction it comes out and retracts normally.

I am not sure if the spring and counter weights are ok as I'm not what I'm looking for sorry

Thanks again for your help

After looking at a diagram I realize I do not have a recoil gasket this must be why There was sealant around it. I will pickup a gasket today and see if that makes a difference.

This may also be why it wont fire when I tighten the screws as without the gaskey possible they go to far ?

Try it but the gasket is not that thick, Is the starter healthy maybe it needs cleaning (Brushes) or replacing,is you fly wheel cogs in good shape or look worn?

yea I just picked up the gasket not sure that is going to do much. Starter is new as I thought that was my issue and replaced that only to find out it was really the bendix. Flywheel looks fine

Heres an intresting part I found out last night. My battery died (3weeks old) so I jump it and while it was being jumped it worked as it should. But once the cables were off the starter would spin but the bendix didnt come out to engange the flywheel. That and when I fully tighten it doesnt even spin. Starting to pull my hair out on this one.

I might try the old one again and see if any differances
