A simple observation, while changing oil on my expedition for the first time, I was following the polaris specs and poring away when all of a sudden the oil starts flowing out of the top of the crankcase. Only a half quart short! Thinking I must have counted wrong, keep in mind I had to count all the way up to five. But no, I did count right. I knew, no matter how hard I tried I'd never get the 5.5 qts in the motor like polaris said I should. So I contacted polaris and asked them if their specs were a wee bit off. No way they claimed that could never happen. So I'm going to try it again pretty soon I'm due for a oil and lube job before spring. I was curious if anyone else with an expedition noticed this, or if mine is only my machine with the compact crankcase.

changing my oil on mine i had no problems at all. i changed the filter as well..it took 5.5 quarts and it was full..i didnt have any oil puking out..its possible you were pouring too quick and it berped, ive seen that happen many times..also about 4 quarts into it i started the engine to fill the filter, that might be your problem too..good luck but it sounds like it was one or the other to me

Actually it didnt burp or get airlocked, when
it was over full, I had to take some out to get to the proper level on the dipstick. That was about 400 miles ago and I havent added anything yet, its
always in the full area on the dipstick(which in my opinion is very hard to read being dark colored).

I normally just put five quarts in mine and leave it at that.

Same here, 5 qts has always got me to the mark on the dipstick.....I think! I agree that its difficult to "see" the oil on the dipstick, especially when its clean.

The Polaris Xpedition 425 Parts List pdf(from Polaris web site) lists engine oil capacity at 5.0 quarts on page 4 . There are several misprints in the 2000 xpedition 425 owner's manual supplement.

Thanks big bubba, I know my manual says 5.5
qts. I think polaris wants us to feel good about only having to put in 5 qts, I keeps our mind off the price of their $6.00 / quart oil.

425 synthetic oil--I just had to pay $16 a quart for mine at CTC.
