Default is it hard to replace a cam?

i have changed my air filter fuel filter and got some seafoam running threw the gas right now.. the only thing i havnt done is taken the carb off and cleaned it out...

it revs up good in nuetral... but when riding when you put the throttle down it sputters a bit... only at full throttle... so im thinking possibly the cam.. does that sound right..?

Yea sounds like what mine is doing, fixing to do a cam swap myself. The only tricky part to it is the spring for the compression release from what I hear, maybe someone will chime in with some tips to save us some time.

You could be lucky and just look at the cam lobe to see if it worn through the top/side inspection plate or take head off if thats not enough of a view.

If its OK sputtering can be caused by worn clutch buttons also from what I hear. Is the motor to carb hose tight and not leaking air,its important on a CV carb.

the clutch was just done so it better not be that... i looked at the boot from motor to carb and all looked good there as far as i could see.. i might have to take the gas tank off and do the carb and check the cam... is it hard...? could i mess anything up by just looking?

I never look did it but buy the manal the cam inspection and replacement does not seem to be a bad job.

Here is a quote I found from a person who did.
Check the cam. Easy to do. Just remove valve cover, pull pullstarter and look at rocker arms. Both should move DOWN the same. If the ones on front don't move very much, it is a cam problem. Easy to fix, just got finished doing my '99. Would also recommend replacing both sprockets, a few gaskets, all rocker arms and chain at the same time! Dealer parts cost about $600. Also would put in high-output cam when replacing. Also clean the in-tank filter on the oil line and an oil/filter change BEFORE riding. Those shaving had to go somewhere! Hardest part is removing flywheel and stator and readjusting the valves. Also, you will need one special tool to remove the sprocket on the crankshaft for replacement.
Usually its the exhaust lob,not the intake. your systoms do not sound right from what I read about cam lobe wear. When the cam goes the ATV will just idle ok but falls on its face from then on,no low .mid or top performance but cheak it out anyways.

Other sputtering problems are weak inigtion coil, air box leak hose or lid. Dirty jet.

read this post to see why people should not think the worst. http://forum.highlifter.com/tm.aspx?m=1883624&high=lobe
