Looking for a rear gear box temp on a 850xp
#1
If anybody has the time, I am looking for a rear gear box temperature on a 850xp. Mine gets to 225 degrees after 10 miles at 55. The cv joints were at 250 degrees.
I need something to compare it to, because it really wines. The mechanics are going to dig into my cv joints next week because of the bad clicking but the gear box has me a wee bit concerned too.

That can not be right!!! Your engine oil is about 100 deg less than that.....If it wines like that it is probably set up way too tight.....Wow thats hot though.....I assume you are using a non-contact heat gun for your reading?

Yep, ifrared no contact gun. Polaris said they run hot but didn't know a temp. They said not to hold your hand on it.
Soooo if any of you can chime in on this so I have a comparison it would be appreciated.

I ran 15 miles at 50 tonite with the 4 wheel drive engaged on gravel after using it a little. CV joints 285, gearbox 230, front gearbox was 115. So the front isn't getting even close to the same temp the rear. Not suprised. The bad cv joints could be creating the extra heat in rear gear case. So it would be interesting if someone else can get a cv joint temp also.

230*F is too hot..if the case is reading 230 the oil is actually much hotter due to how fast the alum housing dissapates heat...road race autos with alum housings rarely see a case temp of 230 unless something is wrong. IMO the whining you hear over the machine and wind noise at speed is a no brainer than something is not right!!!!

I'm going to try bringing it next week and I'll report back. Nobody knows how hot the gearcase should be running. With the front case at 115 the rear should be just a little warmer is my guess. If anybody can give me what their gearcase and cvs are running it would be useful. The cv joints are just smokin hot. I'm waiting on parts for my kids 2000 magnum, otherwise I would check that gearcase just for an idea.

The engine oil red line on my aircraft was 104C (220 F approx) so your readings are pretty darned high.

Good to know, and the gearcase isn't exposed to near the friction as an engine is. That also was the aluminum temp OUTSIDE the gearcase. I assume they build the gear cases to only create so much heat. I would think just testing like a 2000 magnum should give me what a rear gearcase should be at for temp? It should be darn close to the 115 degrees of the front gearcase.

I have heard of others having problems with the XP axles, and they were replaced by Polaris under warranty
they were also having clicking, and whining problems, so I would surf over to the highlifter fourms, and do a search over there

I found out some other issues to watch for too.
