Has anyone used the 42mm carb on a Scrambler 400?

I have a HPD pipe, Wiseco, Delta V Force 2, Prodesign Cool Head, K&N filter, HPD clutch kit for pipe (including roller clutch) and think it should be going harder than it is. The only thing I have not done is the carb, but want to know if anyone has done this before I fork out 259 squid to Hot Seat.

I have looked into this in detail and according to many, many Sport400 owners and many, many aftermarket dealers, the 42mm is too much. Most recommend the 39mm Keihen. Unless you are running a race set-up that is...then I have heard the 42 can be good.

Just my edjucated and researched opinion.

I hooked one up on my buddy's 400 scrambler. It was a pain in the _ss! They say it will just fit into place, but come on,how do you get a piece of plastic tube for a 32mm hole to fit a 42mm hole? I pretty much jerry rigged it, it ran and I took it down the street and couldn't go past 25 mph.now the thing don't start. I think I put the choke screw in to much. Keep you posted when the problem is solved.

You would have to at least have your cylinder ported to realize any substantial gain from it. The 39mm Kehin is a bear to get in, but once it's on it really rips. Lose the stock airbox, get a K&N with a White Brothers airbox and a good port job and you'll be suprised how many more ponies you have under you.

I put a 39PWK on my 400 after New Years and it's quite a bit of work to get it to fit correctly. I ended up removing the oil injection and going to pre-mix after the install. I haven't played with it very much, the warden ( AKA: Wife ) has put me to work on the house the last couple of weekends, so the jetting is still a bit off.
It definatly makes some more power now. When the jetting's right, it'll RIP !!!

42mm is just a bored out 38TMX, very minimal performance gains at all. Get a 39PWK.

Call HPD and get your stock carb bored it's cheap around 50.00 bucks+ shipping ritter also does this type work, and workes good with the hpd pipe.
I believe this will make your carb a 35.5 mm
this will work good with all the things that you already have done

Yes, it will work well with what he has. But, if he ever goes beyond that (porting, head work, diff pipe, more agressive clutching) it would be useless. Spend the extra money for a 38TMX (Lonestar has them for under $180 I think) if you can;t get the 39PWK (which is closer to $230).

Thanks for all the advice.

Looking at HPD's catalogue, they don't have the 39mm carb to fit a 96 Scrambler, only one to fit the 98-99 Scrambler.

Is there any dis-advantage to using the 42mm carb with out a flow job, remembering I have the V Force Reeds and HPD pipe, Cool Head and Wiseco piston?
