I was changing the transmission oil on my 04 Sportsman 600 and it came out gray. I put in some 10w30 motor oil, rode it for a few miles, and dropped the oil again. It's still coming out gray. What would cause this? Should I keep flushing it with some motor oil until it comes out clean? I know motor oil is not the same as the Polaris Transmission fluid, but it's cheaper and shouldn't harm anything in just a few miles.

 

Its going to turn a little dark because you cant get all the oil out of the trans when you drain it and it mixes with the new. DONT use 10w30 in the trans ,use AGL. The only way to get all the oil out is fill the trans with kerosene to the brim or tear the trans apart and flush! Dont sweat the small stuff,just change the trans fluid once a year or 100 hrs,whichever comes first and the trans should last many years.

 

I agree about the kerosene(;> BUT almost sounds like you might have water in tranny. have you checked the oil? Been riding in the creeks????

 

Seafoam would also be a good alternative to use for flushing the tranny.

 

I've only been in water up to the rack's once about 2 weeks ago. That was only for 3-4 seconds. I thought about water being in the oil, but that's usually more of a chocolate milk color. The oil I was draining was grey.
