Default Valve adjustments on Polaris ATV's?

Do valve adjustments need to be made periodically on Polaris ATV's? Mine has a slight clackity sound coming from it at idle. I was just wondering if valve adjustments were normal for these machines.

The machine in question is a 2001 Sportsman 400.

yes they do need valve adjustment at certain hour/milage. not sure on your bike what the time frame is. it should say in your owners manual or maybe someone here will know how often. worse case, call a dealer to get the correct info.

It' not quite as complicated as it may sound. If it's a 2001 model and you're not sure when it's been done, I'd say it's time.

Most call for it at 100 hrs. New 550/850 is up to 1000 hrs.

The machine has almost 600 miles on it, I'm not sure what the hours are.

Its not that hard of a job. I do mine once a year no matter what the hours or mileage is at.

Not sure on the new 850 but all the older twins IE 600,700,800 were hydraulic valves therefore not needing valve adjustments! I am sure it is the same on the new 850.This is one feature I do miss on my Popo tho not that bad to do on the Grizz.
