Default added plow weight and breaking the cable

I was reading another thread "New Wear Bar" posted by rr-john where He had used a heavy cutting edge and made His own and it reminded Me of My sons plow.
he added a lot of weight, maby 70 to 80 pounds to His plow to hold it down and He is always having to rebuild His cable end due to fraying.
has anyone else here had this problem and what did You do to fix the problem???

well, I could see, if the angle of the cable was very steep, and that would increase the pressure on the end, but I don't think it would be that bad

you could always switch to a tow strap for plowing in the winter

Why couldnt you just spool the cable on backwards? The cable spools under the winch spool. If you unwound all the cable and pushed "out" and spooled it back in then the cable would be coming off the top of the spool thus lessening the angle the cable is bent. I cant think of a reason why it would hurt the winch.

not a bad idea but i dont know if it would decrease the angle enough to stop the steel cable from fraying and wearing out from repeated use on the fairlead.

i think switching from steel to synthetic and pulling from the top of the spool will help.

Thanks,I will get near this machine afer He gets the plow mounted and see what the angle might be and also if there is something getting in the way and causing this problem.
Now We need some SNOW.LOL

I did a lot of plowing with my wheeler and would have to repair the frays a couple times a year, with no extra weight on the plow system. Just a lof of use and the roller would sometimes freeze up and not move as freely as it should in the cold snow. I never found a good fix, tried the rope extension but same issue.

Buy a $10 synthetic 10' cable... they are designed for plows. The one I just installed is rated at 4995 lbs.

i got a synthetic cable with a plastic roller fairlead a few weeks ago. hopefully mine holds up longer than my aircraft cable did. evon tho mine didnt brake. but it was doing a good job on the strands.

you could also get the plow roller fairlead.

Sooo,It does look like the roller on the plow fair lead has a bigger diameter than a standard fairlead. That would probably help a lot.
