Flipping Tie-Rods
#1
Just wondering if anyone has a guide to flipping the tie-rods on a sportsman 500 07' model? Installed 27" Maxxis Zillas and the tie-rod ends are rubbing just a little bit. Would really help having a detailed walk-through of how to do it just, so I don't miss anything. Thanks.

I tried to go this route on my 06 X2 and the mechanic said it was causing the steering to bind. I'm going the spacer route with longer studs. #186 POLARIS EXTENDED WHEEL STUDS +3/8x24 -Grade 8:eBay Motors (item 120510344745 end time Jan-01-10 10:48:46 PST) These are good with a 3/8" or less spacer. I put XTRs on my quad and ran into the same problem. I had a guy fabricate a set of 1/2" spacers so I had to go with some longer studs that I got at Currie Enterprises. Currie Enterprises Racing Rear End Categories Hopefully, they'll get them pressed into the hub in a couple days and I'll be able to tell you how it works out.

Its straight forward to flip them. Disconect the strut end , and bolt them on under instead of on top. You will probably have to space them down slightly with a couple of washers, but the bolts should be plenty long. Then you will have to resset your toe in. I set the toe in by wiring two straight sticks, like 1x2s to the wheels then measure front and back, check your manual for specs. count the turns and try to keep them equal side to side that will keep your bars straight. The only drawback I have noticed with them flipped is a little more bump steer, but I'll live with that versus the wider stance of spacers.

Thanks for the info guys... I flipped the tie rods today, measured the distance from lower a-arms to outside edge of the rotor on both sides then flipped the tie rods and extended the rods and put it back together to the previous measurements for the correct alignment. If anyone else does this be sure to leave the washers on the bottom because the knuckles are recessed for it. I flipped the bolt as well(nut on top now) and I just added a washer to the top. It had a 3/16 clearance when all was said and done.
