Default 97 scrambler thermostat ?????

during a top end rebuild i am deciding on weather or not to replace the thermostat or let it just stay completely open. Is that ok to do? The cooling system caused the overheating issue that killed it originally so i wanted to try to make it better. Thanks for the help!

You should have a t-stat but my dealer wants $95 for a new one. I was going to replace it since I was in there but I reused the old good one with no problems.

My 500 T-stat is in the head and I think it was part of the cam relief cover. You remove it first to get access to the cam.
