I have the 3500 Polaris winch. I don't use it alot, but haven't had any problems. Yes, some people are hard on stuff and nothing will last for them. I'd recommend one. The best part is the over the counter warranty. The others you have to send in for warranty.
I would also recommend the Warn 3.0XT. Had one on my Brute and it was very powerful and never any trouble. If you want to spend a little less, look at Viper.
Definitely get the synthetic rope. If it breaks, you just tie a new knot. They are also very inexpensive to replace now. Cables work well, but are much more trouble with kinks and frays.

Have two warn 25's with steel cable and have abused them, still working great. Have one milemaker 25 its broke again, this is made in china like the gorilla. Had one superwinch no good. Have buddies with the rope instead of wire have not seen one broke yet, but wear spots from the trailer ect. the jury is still out on if the rope is worth the xtra coin.

I'm a Warn guy myself. I have one on my Jeep and it has performed flawlessly for nearly 15 years now. Based on that, I bought the RT25 for my 850xp and have no doubts it'll perform well. The polaris winches got a bad name because at some point they went to chinese crap. But prior, they were Warn manufactured, polaris branded. Don't know if they've gone back to the Warn or not. As for synthetic or steel, I have steel on my ATV and Jeep. Often thought about going to synthetic but haven't. If you do, be sure to take care of it as it can be relatively "fragile" relative to steel.
