Default instrument cluster not working

Hi,

2004 Sportsman 500. The instrument cluster stopped working. It is completely dark. When you start it up turning the key on doesn't light anything up. The manual says this can be caused by a battery overvoltage. Is there a way to determine if this was the cause? I have thought about disconnecting the battery to see if it would start working again.

Thanks for any help

welcome. you shouldn't unhook the battery as it might do more damage w/ no battery to recieve the volage the bike is putting out. did you pull the pod apart to check the big wire connection on the back of the speedo? also if you had a voltage tester you could test the battery w/ the bike running to see how many volts it is while reved to about 3,000. it should read around 13.7 to 14.5 depending on the battery charge.

I didn't mean I'd leave the battery disconnected. If it was shutdown due to some problem...If I unhook the battery and leave it a few minutes. Then hook it back up...if it works then if there is a problem it should shut down again.

No I have not really looked into it at all yet. It was extremely cold today...supposed to back up in the 30's next week so I'll start looking at it then. Not a bike by the way but an ATV.

thanks for your help
