Over Charging !!
#1
Just got my 400L running a few hours ago. Gave it a slight throttle and the headlight brightened then blew out. Suspected overcharging condition,so checked voltage @ battery. Voltage is 16 volts @idle and over 30@ partial throttle. I suspect voltage regulator, is there anything else I should look at. Also where the he!! is the regulator located, is it behind the oil cooler?
Thanks Bill

yep it's going to be a bad recifier(regulator) since that is what controls the voltage. most likely up under the front above the radaitor. should have a wire narness going to it w/ fins. imo

Does the machine have a good battery in it?
If not, replace the battery and then check voltages again. The older machines had some issues that would show up doing what you say yours is and all it needed was a good battery. They make a diode kit to fix it(tho I've never installed one) but if memory serves, it was about the cost of three batteries so in my mind it was a waste of money.

Well I swapped the battery out of the 330 tonight and it fixed my problem, 14.5 volts +/-.25. I was really ready to order a regulator. Thanks for your input 94harley you nailed it. I did however find the regulator/rectifier and it was sandwiched behind the oil tank, which I mistakenly called a cooler in my initial post.
Thanks Bill
