Coolent leak
#1
Ok this is on a 2000 sp 500 with 500 miles on it The owner (Not me) Is not to mechanicly inclined. His wheeler is leeking coolent from the lowerr end near the water pump Would that be the mechanical seal or coulsd it be the cover gasket. Can this be fixed with out the use of the dealer or is it a dealer fix? Help He is selling it this week and needs to get it fixed.

Bars leak works great on small leaks. Most MFG's put this in during production. But if it's within it's 6mon. warry., then take it in. But if it's not, then put in a half a bottle of BarsLeak and run it for awhile and check again.

I went and looked at the bike today and it is definatly wet there and on the frame to it is antifreeze so what else could it be? What happens when you take the water pump cover off will it loose all the coolent or will the mechanical seal keep that from happining?

If you look (really really close) you should see a weep hole in the casting. This is essentially a vent between the oil seal and water seal. If the coolant is leaking out of that, the seal is bad. If not, it may just be the gasket.
Hope this helps.
I suppose now someone is gonna tell me they don't have the vent hole anymore, but the older ones have it for sure. It may be hard to find, but should be there. I emphasize should.
