Are you saying it is running and not charging? If it has been sitting for a while, the battery is almost certainly dead. This should probably be the first thing you check.

if the battery is good and charged, check the recifier(regulator) to see if it has a bad connection or corroded. if it's not a bad recifier then most likely a bad stator or maybe rusted connections by the pick up coil.

hahaha i said i was a mechanic i got the battery covered i jsut dont know much bout the stator and pickup coil and how u test these things i have a service manual for it and it says to check the battery coils, charge coils, stater coils. eciter coils. is this all the stator? i know different wires, and where is this pickup coil/?? the manual states the volatge regulator is not testable so if anyone can help me with that as well. im leanin towards the stator, prolly built up rust is this removable and cleanable cuase if im right this is like close to 400 bucks.....thanks for the help!

There is a 3 ways to test your stator. It should describe it in the service manual. I just went through all of this with my 07 sp 500. Test-1 resistance value of each stator leg. Test-2 resistance value of stator leg to ground. Test-3 measure AC. voltage output of each stator leg at charging RPM. If these tests don't come up to snuff then I would suspect the stator is weak or toast. Have you pulled the recoil housing to see if there has been any water ingestion? Water+electrical components= not good And yes the stators are a little pricey.

I just bought a new stator 2 weeks ago from RickyStator.com. It was only $150. I have not really had it long enough to say if it is good or bad yet, only that it is working. It certainly beats the pants off of $400 for a new one from Polaris. Even if you have to buy a replacement in 3 or 4 years, you still come out ahead by $100.

i checked all the resistances and they dont look well what two wores would i check for a/c volatge on, i imagine with the battery unhooked start it and check for it making volatage, maybe between the yellow and yellor/red wire?

Look in front of the radiator. There is a small box with 4 or 5 wires going to it, don't remember how many. Unplug the yellow and the yellow/red. Test the resistance between them on the wires running back towards the engine with a digital ohm meter. If it shows an open circuit, either the stator or the wires going to it are bad. There are also several other test you can perform.

See this thread for a little more info on testing, or if you would like, you can pm me and I can give you a copy of the service manual.

Unfortunately, yes, the stators do seem to go out quite often judging by all the questions about them on these forums. Water and electricity do not mix well together.

To do a vac test (AC current off your stator) Leave your battery hooked up. Pull the plug coming from your stator and there should be three yellow wires. Those are your three legs. With the engine running set your meter to AC./VAC. and and take readings from your legs. It does'nt matter witch probe is where, just measure the voltage as follows. Leg 1 to leg 2, 1-3, 2-3. you should come up with the same voltage each time +- 15%. Refer to your service manual for proper voltage output on your model.
