Default 1999 Xplorer 400 Charging system/oil residue

I just replaced the flywheel on my 1999 xplorer 400. I double checked part numbers etc etc and made sure I had the correct one. I noticed when I put the new flywheel on it had 4 magnets on the inside instead of 6. I ran the quad today and the battery went completly dead. Then I noticed an oily substance on the engine in various places. Will the engine charge with the 4 magnets and what was the oily substance? It looked like there may have been some anti-freeze mixed in with the oil. The battery is in good shape. Thanks.

welcome to the forum. sounds like you have a leak some where on the seals maybe. there was athread awhile ago about 4 vs 6 magnets onthe flywheel, but can't rememebr if it matter or not . might be able to do a search and find it. w/ a voltage meter you could measure to see if any voltage is being put out. is the air gap right on the fly wheel. make sure the crank seal isn't leaking or it will have to be replaced.

I checked the battery voltage at idle and it was 12 volts. Definetly not charging. I'll do a search for the magnets and see if thats a factor.

Yes your bike needs 6 magnets. 4 magnet flywheels are for sport/trailblazer/scrambler and 350cc bikes

Do you know where I would find that information in writing. I purchased a flywheel on e-bay and the company who sold it to me said it should work with the 4 magnets. Doesn't want to refund my money. Says the part numbers match. Doesn't really care about the magnets. So basically I have a $150 paper weight. I'm going to pull the 4 magnet flywheel, reinstall the 6 magnet and see if it charges. (Keyway is deformed on 6 magnet flywheel but still able to run.) If it charges then the 4 magnet flywheel is not usable on my quad.
