Default Rear spring help

I am getting ready to put EPI springs on the rear and I have a few questions. I do have a spring compressor to use for the rear but I am wondering if the hole shock needs to come off or can you just remove the top bolt? Also, How does the spring retainer come off? Maybe it will be obvious once the spring is compressed but I wasn't sure if it just unscrews or is there a trick to it?? Thanks in advance for the help.

Remove the top bolt on the shock and compress the spring until you can slide the collar off on top of it(you'll see what I mean once the spring is compressed). Remove the tension and spring, slide the new spring on, compress it until you can put the collar back on, remove the spring compressor, and you are done!

I agree with switzomatic. With some spring compressers it is easier room wise to pull the shock all the way off. But in most cases you can leave it on.

I figured once I get the top unbolted it would be easier to see the spring retainer. Thanks. I figure on the right side the exhaust is in the way and it might be easier to remove the whole thing but I will start on the other side and see how it goes...
