Default regulator question

the magnets came off the flywheel on my 1998 sportsman 500. It also took out the stator. I can't find a used flywheel anywhere. My neighbor has a 1996 Sportsman 500 he is parting out. The flywheel and stator will fit my quad but the stator has one extra wire. It's yellow with brown and looks like it goes to the regulator. The 1996 regulator is gone from the donor. What is the yellow and brown wire for and can I put a 1996 regulator on and make it work? I know it's kind of a goofy question but it looks like the cheapest way to get the Sportsman running again. Thanks

The yellow/brown wire does go to the regulator. The colors on the regulator should be red,yellow,yellow/brown, yellow /red,and brown. Should be able to use the 96 regulator I believe. Just match up all the connections and the last one even if its not a yellow/brown should tie in. Be sure to check charging afterwards, around 14-14.5 volts. OPT
