Default 04 sportsman 400 intermittent spark

ok well a week or so ago i put my dads polaris into the storage buliding on our property, before putting it in i turned off the gas and let it idle out. well a week later i pull it out turn gas on and let it warm up. then i go to take off and it started to move and died, like it was out of gas, well i found that it would lose spark above idle and below 4000RPM, if you kept it above 4000 it was good. then it would die. i you revved a couple times in neutral then it would evertualy die, if you turned it off then back on it would fire and stay running for a little whil till it shut off agian? i have cleaned the plug and truly verified that is loses spark. what do you guys think? thankyou

Is it one of the machines with the ECM recall, sounds like that could be it.

Take the recoil cover off ,the pulse coil can get dirty and need a cleaning and re gapping.

alright took the cover off... the pinion on the started drive is a slight bit worn and there are tiny metal particles floating around in there. so the flywheel has to come off, is it a left handed thread and is there anything behind it that i have to worry about. and when i get it back together what should the gap be? thankyou

Just make sure the Trigger/Pulse coil's surface is clean and get it gapped close to the flywheel without rubbing.

well i pulled the flywheel and checked the clearences. it was .026" between the pick up and the trigger on the flywheel. well i stumbled upon something else. while looking at the stator and flywheel i can see where the stator seems to be contacting the flywheel. it looks polished. are they suppose to be touching or not?

anyone have an idea? i havent messed with this thing in a while but i keep running into it in the shop so it needs to run!! i can get it to idle but once i put a load on the charging system(turn lights on) it shuts off, or if i touch the throttle it will shut off, i have removed the fly wheel and cleaned everything, i was wondering if i could run it with the stator unplugged, the pick-up still plugged in and the battery on a charger? my dad wants to take it to a stealership and i wont allow it!!! I dont have much time till his parental abilities take over!!
