Polaris 300 Xpress timing issue
I have a 1998 300 Xpress I bought from a neighborhood kid as a project. There was no spark when I bought it. The CDI had been replaced due to failure, but that did not correct the spark issue. I replaced the exciter coil and now I have spark.
Here's the issue I currently have. When I try to start it the starter will crank it for a couple of seconds and then it sounds like it fires way too advanced. Instead of accelerating the engine, it sounds like it slows it down, almost as if it is firing just as compression is beginning. The CDI that the previous owner put on it is for a sportsman 400, which times at 23.5 @ 3000rpm vs. the stock 25 @ 3000rpm for the Xpress. Could this be causing the issue? It seems like that should retard the timing instead of advancing it.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
