Bigger is NOT always better for ones needs. I wanted the monster (SP800) to push bigger tires. But I notice a huge disadvantage in some trail systems we ride (mountain terrain, rutted steep hills) b/c of the jumpy throttle effect coupled with the front lift when you throttle, not the best for steep hilling (will learn how to feather the throttle to compensate). So after having both mid range and now 800, I want a mid size again with better handling and more nibble for the trails I ride (thick wooded pines too on hunting property). You have to examine your needs and match it with what kind of riding you like to do. -- IMO

Either way you won't go wrong with either!

You need an XP R'. The clutching is soooo much better, especially for your needs.

I'd definitely take the XP for a ride before you make any decisions.

The 800 is only 30lbs heavier (830lb vs 800) and the 550 is actually higher. 2009 Polaris Sportsman® 800 EFI X2 ATVs
When it comes to Polaris most all there utiltiy ATVs are in the same weigh range no matter the motor size. The 1999 Sportsman 335 weighed only 27lb less than the 500 ,670lb vs 697lb.

I don't think one will really notice the minor difference in power unless you ride them back to back.
The 800 Twin has more than a minor power difference over the 550 single.
