Default 550 X2 or 800 X2???

I am currently looking at the Polaris X2 model. I priced out a 2010 550 X2 and a new non-current 800 X2.

The 550 is $7,699
The 800 is $7299

I have read that the 09 550XP had some minor engine issues...I am guessing because it was a first year model

The 800 has been a proven reliable engine.

Do I go for the cheaper of the two and get a bigger engine? Or do I go with the more expensive machine and get a all new chassis and engine. The look of the machine does not make any difference. I will be using it for utility work around the farm.

Lets hear the comments.

Cheaper and a smoother more Powerful Twin cylinder motor, I get the 800 in a minute. The XP would need one VERY Impressive chassis to make up its power disadvantage. There no technical wounder about the new 550 motor, it just a single cylinder,SOHC with a 50cc and 4 hp increase over the previous 500.

Its one Pricey mid bore ATV here as well, our dealer sells both Polaris and Suzuki and the King Quad 750 big bore sell for a less as well.

For utility work I would recomend the 800. That motor is a torque monster with noticeable power over the 550.

I think you can barter much better on the 800 than the 550 since it is not the latest model to come from Polaris.

G21C.........How about the comfort end of it. Were you able to sit or ride 550 or 800?....and if you did....which one felt the best and what year 800? I have a tendency to lean toward the newest and best when it's pocket book possible. Either way, the X2 is a good buddy to have.....NoJoke

I sat both and bought the 550 XP. The XP is WAY more comfortable, but I would would go bigger for a 2up model, IMHO while it has power to spare for 1 person, it doesn't quite have the power for 2 "healthy" people

Um it also is turned in the frame and plants the power to the ground better. The real deal for me was the handeling was night and day differnt for me. Plus I hear the 800 get hot on your leg

I wrestled with the same thing when I bought my 550X2. I really wanted a twin for the torque. But, I was sold on the narrower seat, better ride, and better steering. I don't think one will really notice the minor difference in power unless you ride them back to back.

The 550 will give you better gas mileage, less weight (a little), and one less spark plug to change! But, I certainly won't blame you if you go with the 800.
