Default 05 Phoenix no spark?

My son was riding shut it off then a few minutes later it would not start. Checked and it was getting fuel and I pulled the plug wire and checked for spark with a screw driver none. I finish the honey do list and get back to it a few hours later and i'm looking for an in line fuse some where and cant find it so I start moving some wires and then we try it and it starts he runs the crap out of it for a few hours starts and stops it and it's fine then on the way home it dies up the road so we push it back and it was dark so it will have to wait until I get home later today too look at it. Any thoughts?

sounds like maybe a wire is grounding it out some where> any bare wires or loose connections?

I think I checked it all and found nothing. When this thing was new I had to replace the regulator/cdi because the it overheated and the back of it melted. I pulled it off and it looks ok but it has a funky smell to it like a bad light ballast.
