Well back in 2006 I was looking for two Quads,my wife and I, So I really did alot of homework and internet info before I made my choice to drop $16,500 canadian dollars.
Here is what I wanted in a Quad:
1. disc brakes
2. ind. susp.
3.4x4
4.best lighting on the market (at the time)
5.some storage
6.auto shift
7.towing cap. (1450 lbs.)
8.ground clearance

So after this I went shopping.
All these listed above were in Polaris. My first choice would have been Yamaha but to buy a Yamaha in 2006 with all these features would have been around 10,000 dollars each.
I want two .......So Polaris was the way to go.....Caper..

I bought Poalris because I saw them on craigslist. My previous had been a Yamaha Warrior and a 400ex. I bought a 94 250 trailboss, 1 parts same and 1 trailblazer all for 600. Fell in love with the automatic. Traded back and forth, sold all them, even had a warrior in the deal but now have an 02 Trailboss, 02 500 sportsman and an 03 trailboss.

Love the comfort after a long day. Have I worked on them, sure, but don't have more than 1500.oo in any of them individually, And the sportsman has 13,000 miles.

If I bought new I would look first at a popo. TonyT

Howdy all.....I was looking at the Polaris Sportsman and the Yamaha 700 for an ATV. When I sat on a Sportsman, it just felt better to me. I like the sturdiness of the plastics, the suspension and bottom skid protection. The front end storage was a major factor....I went for the X2 for the longer wheel base, cargo bed and the 6 gallon tank. I found out later that the Turf mode was a BIG bonus. I used this forum and other ATV forums to gather as much info as I could before purchasing........then I stuck around here.....great forum..... NoJoke

My buddy bought a 400 Sportsman new in 1996. Plows with it every year, pulls logs, etc. Other than a new top end, he never had a problem with it. Still has the original belt on it!!! That's what sold me

I have a 550 non EPS.. Love it!!! Have over 1000 miles on it and not one problem. I also have a 05 sportsman 700 EFI with 3300+ miles and have had very few isues (3 self-inflicted) and 1 fuel injector (at 2800 miles and cost me $112 to fix)... You will not be disapointed with a 550

I love the Polaris (especially the older ones) due to the simplicity and ease of working on them.Never liked the idea of running a transmission in with the engine.

I borrowed my friends 500ES Foreman, what a drag it was to always have to shift gears to be in the right power band.
