I have a 2005 phoenix 200 and am having a couple of problems right now.
Periodically the starter motor will be unable to turn the engine. The Battery is brand new and the voltage is normal. Sometimes the kick starter will work sometimes not.

Second, when it does run, it runs smooth and has plenty of power. The problem is that when coming to a stop or idling for a couple minutes it will stall (No sputtering or anything unusual) and will not start for at least 5 min or so.

I have completely cleaned the carburetor, replaced the oil, oil filter and spark plug. The mixture and idle speed seem fine. I adjusted the throttle play. I don't really know where to go from here.

 

hhhmmmm...no answers ....did you get your Phoenix figured out?
We are looking at these as a potential vehicles for our boys.....I know if you havent gotten it figured this question will could get a negative response but what do ya think of it?...you mentioned it rode well when it is running. Doe it have enough power to ride confidently?

 

The Phoenix and Sawtooth carbs have d ring adjuster screw for air fuel mixture. I've had similar problems with them about idling and adjusted the mixture screw in until rpms started to drop and out until same thing,then kinda split the difference. They did have a bulletin about using a hotter plug (cr6es I think is the plug,plus air box intake tube replacement(may have been on later ones,can't remember)
Plus they do have a little clunk going into gear,sometimes best to blip throttle in neutral and then engage fwd or reverse,has a more positive engagement and doesn't jump into gear. Back to the carb,hard to adjust with out the d ring driver,(can get at auto stores) needle nose pliers will mess it up. Best I can remember on these models. Ps the owners wife has a 2006 Sawtooth and they use it around the shop and at home with a tank sprayer and she loves it.Still running good when I left the shop! OPT

 

I did get the bulletin about the spark plugs when I first got it.

Since the last post the machine has been fixed and is running great. This is what happened.
I decided to take the Phoenix to a different dealer who informed me that there was a recall on them with the intake system. The dealer took care of the recall and checked out the starter issue. It turns out the starter had gone bad because of the constant stalling and warn out battery. The starter was replaced and I got the machine back. Not long after the stalling problem continued and this time it was also caused by adding any sort of electrical load to the machine (Head lights and such). After much prodding I discovered that the ignition harness was loose and filled with mud and dust greatly increasing its impedance to ground. This explained why it would stall under electrical load and just sort of randomly. I cleaned and reattached the harness and haven't had any problems since.

In response to SOLOLUCKY's post I would recommend this machine with one note. the 2005 I have was the first year the Phoenix was in production, as such it has its bugs. After recalls they are very minor. I would recommend purchasing one 2007 or later as I know they have updated them a bit to resolve these issues. If not make sure you check and get the recalls fixed. They are great and very solid machines and really easy to learn to ride on. (My sister learned to ride on it). They will go almost any where a 4x4 would if you know how to ride it. The only thing we've ever gotten it stuck in is some deep icy snow. Its surprisingly powerful and with the exception of the electrical issue that I fixed much more problem free then my friends Yamaha's have been. With a good rider it can usually keep up with my Sportsman 700. I will not this though, its a trail quad, not a sport bike. It tops out at about 35 and is a bit too narrow for hard track riding. Aside from the issue above it has had very few issues (Many fewer then my sportsman, not that its a bad machine either, as the stalling was all one problem)
