TITAN 589s and snow!
#1
I finally got my Titan 589s on(rears only, dunlops in front). I tried my Spider Tracs in the snow, but all the other guys with stock dunlops did alot better. Guess the Spider Tracs are too wide for good snow traction. Needless to say I was very dissappointed because I spent $500 for them on 12" rims thinking they would be good in the snow. WRONG! The 589s are a totally different matter! I can go almost anywhere, even in 2wd! Went riding with the other guys yesterday(Magnum 500, Explorer 500, and Kawi Prairie 400) and ended up breaking trail for those guys. I couldnt outrace them in the fields(about even), but wasnt left in the snow dust again. The only thing I dont like about these tires is the weight. They are heavier than the dunlops, ride a little harder, and rob some power. But at least I dont have to worry about getting a flat every time out like the Dunlops. Still, if I had to do it over again, I would probably stick to the Stock dunlops for the winter. They do very well in the snow, are low priced, ride soft, and are light. The 589s are very good in the white stuff though, and they look awesome.
Has anyone tried any of the other mud tires in the snow? Wondering how Vamps, Outlaws, and Blackwaters are in the snow. Are they too wide to get good traction? How about in different kinds of snow, wet, fluffy, granuler? I know everyone probably has trouble in the wet stuff, and the fluffy stuff is usually pretty easy for any tire.

The vamps are just as good in the snow as Titans. One thing though, on packed trails the stock tires are faster than mud tires. The mud tires have to dig in, but the stockers can ride on the top. We noticed almost a 10mph difference between stock tires and vamps in the snow, with the vamps being the slower.

I got the 25x12x10's so they would fit my stock 10x8 rear rims. I am running 4 psi in the Dunlops and 6psi in the 589's. I was worried about a size difference until I put the titans next to the dunlops. If the titans are smaller, it is very minimal and I dont feel it will affect the AWD, especially on trails. They look smaller than the dunlops because the tread on the 589 is so deep which makes the main body of the tire smaller to keep the 25" diameter.
I noticed that when I had my stock dunlops on the front and rear that the diameters differed significantly with changes in air pressure because the dunlops are so soft. Most of the people I ride with, run about 8psi in the front dunlops on their Polaris' and 4psi in the rear. If you take the tires off and set them side by side you will notice that the fronts are taller than the rears. If you ride alot on paved surfaces, than you should make sure the tires are as close to the same size as possible if you are going to use AWD. On dirt it is not as important. I have 3000 miles on my 1999 Magnum 500 with no ill affects because of differences in tire diameters. Obviously you should not run 25s and 27s together unless you like to leave your quad in the shop for repairs.
