what is the easiest way to tell if my 1998 trail boss is not firing

You mean to see if you got spark ? Just pull the plug reinstall the plug wire on to the plug , set the plug on the top of the motor and pull the beast over and watch for a spark .

ok thanks i am getting no spark, i was yesterday but now, i'm not what could it be, it is a 1998 trail boss

try a new plug as well, you may have gas fouled your other one
