489's work fine for my riding areas.
Seems to be common in this thread to push your thoughts as the only way it should be, not everyone rides a sport quad, not everyone needs big mudder tires, not everyone needs power steering, not everyone needs the biggest or the fastest. Wouldn't bother me if all atv's were limited to 40 mph, but some people want to go faster, see? Options, thats why they are called... options.

The tires on the 09 and most of the 10 XP's are Carlyle Terrathons.. They suck. OK they don't totally suck, just mostly. They're ok on dry hardpack trails with little elevation changes. Otherwise they just plain suck. Pack up in mud, no traction in wet. OK another place they're at least fun on is wet grass.. sorta like driving on ice, if you like drifting a quad, which I occasionally do. I'm looking to replace mine, maybe with GBC Sparticus radials.
I was kinda pissed at Polaris for going away from the PXT/ACT's on their quads... they really are a good all purpose tire.

With the amount of money spent on these things, do you think it would hurt to have a tire option when you buy it?? I would rather wait for a good set of tires, then to take it with crappy tires.
When I get mine, I would love to have Maxxis Big Horns , but will probably just suffer with the 489's until I can save some cash.
Would you guys??
