I am trying get my daughters 03 Sportsman 90 electric start to work. I recently purchased this atv and the guy told me the electric start works but the battery just needs replaced. Well I put a brand new charged battery in and no electric start, only kick start. When I push the electric start button it doesn't do anything , once in a while it would make a whining sound but not even that now. I am going to replace the starter but I was wondering if anything else might be to cause? What is a Stator?? Is there any way to test the starter to find out if that is the cause?

 

stator doesnt have anything to do with the electric start. The electric start motor may be seized. The stator is like the alternator in a way keeps the battery charged, lights working, and power for spark.

 

OK, Thanks. That answers my question. I will replace the starter motor.

 

I would check the starter motor once you have it out to see if it's functioning before I replaced it. Maybe it was just jammed up somehow, or tight from not being used for so long?

Good idea. I will take it out tonight and see if it is tight or jammed.

 

Sometimes the gear tooth on the end may be worn........The starter on my Sears lawn tractor havs a plastic one that I replaced already.......Caper.
